About Atypical Dad

atyp·i·cal
1. Not conforming to the normal type.
2. Unusual or irregular.

The more that I interact with the parents of my children’s friends, the more I realize that I may be considered a bit unusual in the eyes of many.

It might be my appearance (shaved head, earrings, tattoos, long untamed goatee) that catches people off-guard; or when I pull up to the school to pick up my son on the Harley and see the inquisitive looks from the other parents, as surely there could be no valid reason that someone that looks the way I do and rides a Harley would be stopping at the school.

Some might say it is rather odd that a father of two jams to music all across the spectrum – from the Ting Tings to the Black Eyed Peas to Elbow to Ministry to Pantera to Tupac to Ne-Yo to Theory of a Deadman to…well, I think you get the idea.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am just like many dads in that I have an unfortunately typical office job and work hard to provide a healthy, happy, and stable environment to raise my kids. On most evenings and weekends, you will find me outside playing with the kids or cheering them on at their event of the day.

In many ways, I am a typical dad – but in the eyes of many I am an atypical dad.
